(Ancient Greek for “single color”)

Monochrome painting can be described as one of the most reduced variants of abstract painting, given that it involves the use of only a single shade of color. Moreover, it is a form of painting that does not aim to represent anything or to refer to some image-based theoretical content. Instead, it reflects the process of its own creation and the nature of its own materiality: What color is applied to what substrate with what instrument and manner of application?
