Allerbeste Aussichten - Best Prospects

The exhibition Best Prospects introduces nine young artists who were born in the 1970s or 1980s and educated at various art academies in Germany under the aegis of various prominent art mentors. Reflecting the development of new and unique artistic voices, the works of these artists encompass a full range of genres – from painting to sculpture and from drawing to video and installation art. If there is anything that distinguishes all of the artists aside from their variety, it is certainly their apparent reluctance to adopt any absolute or particular posture. In a dialogue with the collected works of the Ege Art and Culture Foundation whose KUNSTRAUM offers a dynamic and discursive place of experiencing past and present avant-garde works of art, the artists featured in the exhibition are afforded an opportunity to examine their own artistic works and pursuits in terms of traditions and contingencies. Even if one might search in vain for less inherent common denominators among the various works, all of them involve a consideration of the image in and of itself: its emergence, its conditions, its recognition, its perception – in short, its nature. For instance, the featured artists turn their own daily activities into a subject of inquiry. In some cases, they also illuminate the dimension of materiality and develop imaginative forms of representation from this dimension in combination with associative titles. What emerges are procedural works that switch back and forth between analogue and digital techniques while revealing multifaceted spatial depths. In light of the various dimensions involved, they seem to conceive of the image as something that is open and inviting, something that encourages one to explore in general, and to search for and find the art image in the art space. By personally reflecting on and questioning the image concept in this manner, the participating artists arrive at what could be referred to as their very own artistic script. Precisely in times of our spiking exposure to digital images, the question “What images (of art) are being created today?”, which serves as a starting point for this exhibition, appears to be more relevant than ever. And can there be better prospects in this regard than those that these young artists offer us in the here and now?
